Sustainable Agriculture
The Sustainable Agriculture Program of ASLM promotes eco-agricultural practices in order to minimize adverse impacts related to misuse of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, avoid the clearance of natural ecosystems, ensure the well-being of farmers, and conserve biodiversity in agro-ecosystems.
Past Projects:
Promotion of traditional crop varieties using organic farming methods at Sudupanawela, Moneragala District (2001-2002)
Rehabilitation of abandoned small irrigation tanks and agro-enterprise development in Wellassa, Uva Province (2000-2006)
Establishment of an organic farming village in Anjaliewewa, Moneragala District (2005-2007)
Cultivation of Margosa (Neem) plants in the Kurunegala District to produce biopesticides (2004-2007)
Ongoing Projects:
Promote Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) Farm Standards among tea plantations in Sri Lanka (Partners: Rainforest Alliance – South Asia, tea small holders, and tea production companies).
